What a revelation…

Interesting idea to market your services though it is pretty tricky out there and schools are notoriously, (in Victoria anyway), very frugal when it comes to spending on PD. As my Prin explained to me when I suggested I could add a little on a PD for me, teachers in the department are not allowed to earn from providing additional services to departmental teachers. You also have to factor in the need to get a venue and pay for that etc.
Another idea might be to get in contact with a publisher and begin to develop podcasts for schools. Pearson publishing have just released what they call Podcrammers at http://www.pearsoned.com.au/podcrammers. Initially it is directed at the VCE market with key concepts for A Unit for each Study being delivered by download for $14.95.

Thanks for the advice John. I’n not too concerned about the ins and outs at the moment, as I’m not expecting to get a whole lot of business. But I reckon the community organisation sector might be a niche, as they often do work around technology and young people, as well as education programs.
add another DOE factor…anything you develop at school, or use with your students at school (eg trialling) is onsidered to be ‘owned’ by the DOE.
they own the copyright!!

the way around this ..is not to use the material in your own school…get other teachers in your school to trial on your behalf.
as soon as you use it yourself it becomes DOE property.
I can see how DoE would be able to claim copywright: after all, I got funding through DoE to develop the idea! However, once the idea is developed, I’m the one doing the work to train others in this, so it seems to me that I’m “adding value”, and therefore should be able to charge some money.
